Not my intention to troll. Hey, fandom’s great. I consider myself a fan, and why would I be posting here if I didn’t? But I think the function of fandom has been to encourage obsessions and emotional investment into a fictional text. Which is great for the fun side of things and can result in wonderful creative works and true friendships, but I do not believe fandom is not the best place to look for realistic perspective.

Not because the people on the other end of the computer lack it IRL (because fans run the gamut of professions, ages, sanities, etc.), but behaviorally, they are currently engaged in fan behavior, which is great in the relatively safe environment in fandom, but not so much when one translates it offscreen. For instance, I do a lot of squeeing in fandom, I exaggerate my emotions, I read and vicariously enjoy fiction with characters in unsafe situations. These behaviors acceptable and encouraged in fandom can lead to problems when one translates it into RL actions.

And when one goes to fandom searching for advice in RL issues, and those fen find it difficult separating fannish lives from their real lives (as I believe is the case with this secret, unfortunately), things can get pretty unkosher fairly quickly.

In short: I love my fandoms, but boy my fandoms are everfucking CRAZY.
