The rock in question has become the be-all-end-all descriptor for Main Character A's eyes, of course. Main Character A is a guy, and normally this would be okay, but the authors who describe his eyes as 'sparkling amethysts' tend to do it in order to make him OMG SUPER KAWAII DESU UKE ~~~~~XD!!

Which makes me sad. Because said character is my absolute favorite, is nothing like that, and I LIKE that gem! But now it's pretty much been turned into the Ultimate Red Flag for badfic about this character, so by association, even when I'm reading historical / non-fiction texts about, say, natural resources of Ancient Egypt, I still get the knee-jerk reaction of "BAD FIC AUGH RAGE" that just absolutely knocks me out of my zone, even when it doesn't apply.
