So then what impact does the stuff that happened later have on how you feel about his character?

I think it makes him a more sympathetic character, yes. The same way Darth Vader becomes more sympathetic when he saves his son and redeems himself even though he blew up a planet in an earlier installment. That cool with you?

I think maybe there's been some misunderstanding in this conversation between the idea of "bad guy" and the idea of "sympathetic". I'm way more comfortable with the idea that what we're talking about makes him sympathetic.
