I probably personally wouldn't use the word 'problematic', because I don't think he's really writing those things in a way that is laudatory or anything like that. Squicky certainly.

At the same time, obviously, I am aware this is a matter of some debate in the fandom generally

I don't know. After Promethia and Lost Girls, I've come to suspect he likes pushing those buttons a bit.

I think he is committed to writing about those topics. It's part of his style. I don't know if that's a bad thing. I've generally found what he's said about the topic pretty compelling.
