Interesting AUs

What are some interesting AUs that you've read and really enjoyed? Bonus if they are (as far as you know) the only one of that kind.

I read a fic once in the Sherlock fandom where everyone in the world disappeared for a year except John and Sherlock. There was no explanation as to where anyone went and when they reappeared, it was like they were never missing.

I always thought it was super fascinating and would have loved a longer fic exploring how people deal with basically being the last people on Earth then the aftermath of dealing with learning how to live in the world again.

I don't know if it's unique, but backstory swaps can be really interesting if they're done well, because thinking about how people can come from very different places, have very different personal histories, and end up with any resemblance to their canon selves - that draws me right on in.

Yeah, I read one where Bilbo was the dwarven king and Thorin the hobbit. So much better than I thought it would be at first.
