I'm pretty sure the movie is supposed to be a depressing, uncomfortable mess - set to a fantastic soundtrack.

Thank you. It is drama, not comedy (which the other commenters here seem to think).

In my interpretation it's about the discordance between the noisy, glossy life one's supposed to have according to trends and real peoples' need of intimacy, respect and to be seen as themselves, not as objects or weighted against a trend's superficial values. That discussion is still valid today.

Our values will be harshly viewed by later generations too, for good reasons.
