When I was in college I worked in the cafeteria food service to help pay my tuition. There were a lot old white ladies on the staff, but also several black cooks and dishwashers. One day one of the guys was teasing me as we were cleaning tables after the lunch rush/ He made a comment that started with "Girl... " I joked right back with a comment that started with "Boy..."

He gave me a sharp look and it was only then that I realized that as well as being the corresponding word to 'girl' it could also be taken as a racist thing (which was not at all my intentiion!) I was horrified, apologized profusely and awkwardly, but I am still horrified about it, even now, years later.

I'm reading the book Is It Just Me? by Miranda and everything pales in comparison to her stories. However the time when my shirt got unzipped while I was running around so that my friends could see me in a bra and I didn't notice for the longest time still stings.
