I think you might be confusing the complaint fic writers and fan artists have. Typically saying "pay me" is a response to someone making a "request" to draw or write something for them.

I don't work for free, so I won't draw or write anything for someone else for free.

I WILL draw fanart and write fic FOR MYSELF (or on occasion, for friends) for free. And I am more then glad to share it for free.

But this is done at my pace, when I have spare time, and I only draw what I want. When you do things for other people, even if you don't take money, it can add a level of pressure and some people are not very patient about it. There's also this problem in fandom where a lot of fans just expect people to take time (and money) out of their day to do things for free.

And the more popular in fandom you are, the more requests you're likely to get any given day. To be honest, it gets kind of annoying. And to me it's impolite to message a complete stranger and ask them for a free gift.

There are always going to be parts of fandom that are not transactional, I don't think you need to worry about that. But I think a lot of artists and fic writers are trying to get people to stop demanding they do things for them just because it's fandom.
