You've managed to put my frustrations into a much more eloquently phrased post. The fandom I'm talking about isn't a small one, but it's insular enough to have a couple BNFs who control the discourse--and these BNFs, like I wrote in my other comments on this thread, happen to be very attached to their "Character A bottoms ONLY and was a gay/bi playboy before he met Character B" canon to the point where they've made multiple posts about it. Since these BNFs put out both fic and art, you can kind of see the birthplace of where fanon gets turned into "canon" in my fandom. "I like their fic/art, I want to keep seeing more of it, maybe if I do more of the same or praise their headcanons we'll get more fic/art", so on and so forth.

The insular nature of the fandom and the ship particularly was just a perfect breeding ground for this sort of issue.

It frustrates me on multiple levels. One level is obviously the purely selfish motive of "I hate this headcanon, I think it's the opposite of how Character A acts and was meant to be characterized, where the fandom sees 'whimpering submissive bottom boy praise kink man' I see 'Quiet, barely controlled violence and revenge, Character B through being a good person and good FOR Character A has helped calm these turbulent emotions down but it's pretty obvious Character A has some major issues and keeps a tight reign on himself and I personally think that probably extended to his bedroom and what he would allow other people to do to him (oh, and double evil sin in this fandom, I think Character A was probably mostly if not entirely straight before Character B entered the picture (it's definitely a lot more complicated than just "Character B turned him bi" but I can't say more without giving away the fandom))".

The other level though is just as a reader...reading the same damn headcanon over and over again gets BORING, even if it happens to be "my kink" that is getting catered to. It just makes the fandom feel stagnate.

I definitely think I'm going to use a sock account and post my fic. :) If it happens to win me some fandom friends who also view Character A (and the Character A/Character B ship) this way, that's all the better and I'll consider it more than a win.
