I couldn't finish, but I wouldn't say I hated her. This book just wasn't to my tastes, I guess. It seemed perfect for me but when I tried to read it, it was like something was missing *shrug*

It was a horrible book, the incredibly obvious ballot stuffing was really noticeable in the poll and off-putting too.

(Anonymous) 2016-11-27 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think there was ballot stuffing, I think there was campaigning, which is a totally different thing

(Anonymous) 2016-11-27 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, the way it kept jumping up in chunks was definitely someone deleting easypoll cookies, hitting refresh, and then voting again. The pattern is pretty obvious once you know what to look for.

DA

Yeah there was both campaigning and ballot stuffing. The latter was disappointing.

I love that I came to read secrets today!

I'm curious anon, what did you hate about Katsa? (I'm not emotionally attached to liking her, so I won't be offended, I just really want to hear your POV)

OP

(Anonymous) 2017-04-17 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
I got real tired of her consistently disparaging thoughts on women who get married and have children and like traditionally feminine things like fashion and makeup or women who genuinely want those things real fast.

It wasn't just once or twice either, it was consistent throughout the book. There's not wanting those things for yourself and then there's "I'm not like other girls teehee" and this definitely felt like the latter.

I read it as a teen, and even then remember thinking it felt very... YA. The female protagonist just felt YA. So, not particularly well developed, boring "badass" woman. She was the bland action girl, who we are told is super badass but isn't actually a person. At least, that's how I remember seeing her... but then again, that must've been like eight years ago I read it. lol

Book club secret!!!!

I'm sorry you couldn't finish it in time for the discussion, I'm sure you could still have been welcome! Discussing why you dislike her is perfectly valid discussion! What about her didn't you like?

(Anonymous) 2016-11-27 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
She was shit, boring, and poorly written. You'd have to be a medical definition moron to have enjoyed or recommended it.

That's really rude.

Hey hey hey. Can we not insult people for enjoying things? I've enjoyed some admittedly silly stories and ridiculous characters. But what you enjoy isn't an indicator of intelligence.

aww, that's a classic and so versatile. :)

Katsa is very much in the vein of the angsty badass teenager who can kill anything and thinks she's a monster because of it. I personally think she's one of the better-written and more sympathetic examples of the trope, but I can understand being sick of it at this point.

She was very tropey that way! Personally I love that trope, especially when applied to a lady but yeah if it's not someone's cup of tea it would be a big slog cause lots of angsty angst :/

Still wish secret maker had shared it with the discussion though, it could have been interesting to discuss what they like and why, then why some of us liked it. Perhaps they'd like the other books, idk. They're much better written than Katsa's imo. Less angsty too.

I found her irritating, self-righteous, self-pitying, and rude.

I also resented comments on goodreads and the like discussing the book as some great feminist fantasy when Katsa hardly even interacts with any other female characters and devotes an awful lot of time to mentally tearing down the female characters she does know aside from Bitterblue.

That said, I agree with her comment downthread, I might enjoy either of the other two novels more. I thought there was some genuine promise in the worldbuilding, I just hated the focal character here.

*Your comment.

Your comment downthread that I'd probably like the other books.

I can understand disliking how she's written and used as a fictional character, but what made you dislike her on a personal level?

DA, but since she's an imaginary person, the terribly annoying, trophy writing is the only "personality" she has, and since I don't like it, I don't like her. She's not an actress playing a badly written, annoying character. Due to bad writing, she is an annoying person.
