Great actors cast in the wrong role

[personal profile] philstar22 2016-11-27 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
What actors do you think are normally amazing, but were the wrong choice for a particular role?

This was inspired by me making it through all of 20 minutes of the new Anne of Green Gables. Martin Sheen is amazing, but as Matthew Cuthbert? Completely wrong choice.

And always the quintissential example for me would be Ralph Fiennes. I've loved him in just about everything, he's one of my favorite actors, but he was totally wrong for Voldemort.

I haven't seen it yet, but I was skeptical... Martin Sheen is great, but I just cannot picture him as Matthew.

Exactly. Matthew is supposed to be shy and retiring and a man of few words. I can't even imagine Sheen pulling that off.

Bruce Willis...well, I wouldn't call him amazing, but he's generally pretty decent. Great in some roles.

He was definitely wrong for The Fifth Element. Not nearly enough personality to convince me that love could bloom on that battlefield.

I actually loved Bruce Willis in that movie! Yeah, the romance didn't quite work (no matter how awesome Milla Jovovich was as Leeloo), but I don't really think anyone else would have made it all that much better. The storyline just didn't have enough time to make it believable.

I don't know about "amazing" actors but a lot of the people cast in the X-men movies were wrong for the roles but I was fine with them in other movies. Jennifer Lawrence is one example, I am fine with her in Hunger Games, she was completely wrong as Mystique (even as a young mystique she just didn't work.)

Speaking of Jennifer Lawrence she's done a few films she's wrong for, like for some reason she's been put in a few roles where she's playing a character that should be considerably older, and outside of the fact that she is young she also looks baby faced and doesn't act well enough for me to suspend my disbelief. This is one reason I didn't like Silver Linings Playbook.

And so I'm not just picking on JLaw, the majority of the live action Batmans we've had have not worked. Some made decent Batmans but a bad Bruce Wayne and visa versa.

Actually in general I'm just going to say comic book movies are often casted completely wrong. There are a few here in there that work but more often then not they don't seem to pick people based on who the character is.

Oh my fuck this just made me remember Jessica Chastain in The Martian. Now don't get me wrong, I fucking love Jessica Chastain and she's one of my favourite actresses, but the character in the novel was apparently supposed to be damn near 50 years old and it just pissed me the hell off that they had to shunt that role to a young actress when it could have been a really great opportunity to get an older actress into a bigger film.

Yes. Also reminds me how movie!Aunt May's keep getting younger and younger.

They barely justify that by having Peter Parker be like 13 in the latest thing, but I'm also mad about that.

Give me grey haired granny-bun Aunt May! She was way more awesome.

It's just a different character. I of all people know that Aunties can be young, but she was never portrayed as such in the comics.

I haven't seen the Martian but I totally understand your complaint, what makes it worse is that it's usually always the actress/female love interest who is WAYYYY younger but then the lead actor will actually be old as all hell.

If the actor is casted younger maybe I wouldn't notice but it's so awkward looking at a woman in her 20s that is supposed to somehow be roughly the same age as a man in is 40s/50s/60s/and beyond.

That shit also REALLY rustles my jimmies. 50 year old male lead, 20 year old female love interest shit has GOT to stop. Mostly because it legitimizes creepy old bastards harassing younger women (mostly service staff because they're forced to be polite) since the media they consume convinced them that was a legitimate thing women want.

Fucking fuck THAT shit.

NAYRT--as a woman who's always been attracted to older guys, this actually bugs me a lot, at least partially for petty reasons. Because "ew why do you like him he's so old" but also "oh I loved that movie I'd totally go for *actor who's 20-30+ years older than female costar/love interest.*" And I'm sitting here going "uh you realize he's way older than her, right, and if I said that about a real life guy you'd be ragging on me about my gross taste in men?" Which gets extra awful and annoying when a rare movie/show casts an older woman opposite an older man but only the woman is "ew so old!" Like, I'm not attracted to women, but it's not like their acting ability goes poof when they hit their thirties (or *gasp* fifties.)

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-11-27 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh don't get me wrong here, it's not the age gap that's actually the problem. It's the fact the roles are so rigidly gendered.

I'd be completely fine with this if it was the case that older women routinely got younger male love interests that weren't some component of gross out comedy, or meant purely for shock value.

I was really annoyed about the lack of older women in that movie. Lots of older men. What happened to all the post-menopausal women and why didn't we find out about the plague or whatever it was that erased them?

Jessica Chastain was great. But.

Gary Oldman as Sirius Black. I like Oldman, but he didn't really capture tortured manchild aspect well. It was all crazy town turned bland mentor with one sentence alluding to his living-in-the-pastness.

I think both Sirius and Remus were majorly miscast...

Pretty much all of that generation were miscast in the movies. Snape as well. Snape was a 30-something year old man who'd basically gone straight from schoolyard grudges to a few years of essentially terrorist warfare ... right back to schoolyard grudges again. He mostly only had gravitas if you met him first as a tiny terrified eleven-year-old. Whereas Alan Rickman was a fifty-something year old who managed to have gravitas when playing a pantsless cockless angel covered in fire-extinguisher foam.

Michael Fassbender as Mr. Rochester. Granted, he was pretty good in the role, but he was way too attractive. Mr. Rochester does not look like that. He's supposed to look like, well, Ciaran Hinds.

Bizarrely, Ciaran Hinds was perfectly cast as Mr. Rochester, and yet he was terrible in the role, making Rochester an often petulant, tantruming child. (And anyone who argues that Mr. Rochester canonically is a petulant, tantruming child needs to go back and read the novel, because no, he is not!)

Same problem with Timothy Dalton in the role!

A good chunk of the cast for American Gods is just wrong, but Orlando Jones, and I do love that guy, is just not right for Mr Nancy.

Tim Roth should never have played Prince Rainier.

^^^ The film was GRACE OF MONACO. ^^^
