OP, why do you need his approval to just play the music at home? I did, and my SO, who is definitely NOT into hip-hop, casually listened until he wanted to know more about it. Now he's really excited to go when the travelling production comes near us. Sometimes your own enthusiasm can be enough to engender curiosity.

Tl;dr enjoy it and let him catch up instead of restricting yourself.
