Ehhhh. To many kids Original Star Wars looks like shit. It isn't bad and was light years (heh) ahead of its time but in an age of Life of Pi and Pixar, it is pretty old fashioned.

Eh, there's some truth to that, it could be considered dated. But at the same time, it's also still basically modern and relatable in comparison to the films around it. Like, compare it to Rocky which came out around the same time - there is a quantum leap in how much Star Wars has the basic structure of a contemporary film and Rocky just does not. so I guess what I'm saying is that Star Wars has dated elements, but it doesn't feel ancient.

True, but when it comes to teenage geeks interested in science, Star Wars is far more likely to be relevant than say, Private Benjamin or Smokey and the Bandit II, which came out the same year.

Also, as much as I love Smokey and the Bandit, it completely feels like it's from a totally different America

Exactly. The whole cultural disconnect is way more noticeable, IMO. I'm also really amused that they made two sequels of that movie with basically the same plot.

It's a really good plot, tbf

also, a really good movie

also, I will never stop wanting Smokey and the Bandit AUs to be a thing

Like a barista AU? Or the characters from a different show smuggling beer?

I think there's a character beat missing with Peter though. This kid is into reworking vintage tech and it seems like a kid like Peter would be well versed in classic nerd culture. The idea that he would call it "that really old movie" doesn't really jive with the character as we've been introduced to him (AGAIN.)
