That in the alien's culture it is compulsory to hand their mate an internal organ from within the body of one of their mate's parents as a symbol of their determination to always fight for their mate's love and approval upon request for betrothal. It isn't their fault that nobody told them humans don't have redundant hearts nor regenerate-able organs. In hindsight it was one of those little cultural differences that was so easy to miss until it happened.
