More therapist talk

How does one go about finding a therapist

what about when one has specific hang ups regarding who they would be comfortable talking to (this isn't my actual scenario, but say someone who was a gay man and would only feel totally comfortable talking to another gay man)

I've mostly found them by searching on Psychology Today, which has a directory of therapists, and also has keywords which would address your second question

I was just about to suggest this, I found someone yesterday and sent an email through the website.

AYRT

The one thing I would say about that is that, in my experience, even though people on Psychology Today have emails listed, they often are more responsive by phone. For whatever reason, most of the people I've contacted have been bad about email. Which is frustrating because e-mail is much more convenient, and also easier for people with social anxiety and stuff, but

THE LGBT organisation I used to volunteer for had a list of friendly therapists, so it's worth looking into.

Anon above who works at a psych agency.

It's really normal for us to get referrals from doctors. Go see your normal medical doctor, talk about your mental health issues, and they will make a referral and help get you to a mental health clinician. You can also just call and request an appointment.

My clinic will take same-sex preferences, though we are hesitant about opposite-sex preferences because we occasionally get creepy, dangerous guys requesting our female clinicians and it gets uncomfortable and potentially unsafe. I'm not sure how specific you can get, but you could always go in for your Diagnostic Assessment, and the clinician who does your DA can make internal (or external) referrals once they get to know you and your situation better, and help you find someone who you would feel comfortable talking with.

As for requesting someone based on sexual orientation, I don't know, some clinicians might be comfortable with that, but the clinician's personal life is generally supposed to be kept pretty private. The gay individual would probably be better off just requesting someone who has experience with counseling LGBT individuals.

The specific resources available will depend a fair bit on your area - I could suggest resources for finding a therapist to someone in my province, for example, but they wouldn't be very useful to someone across the country, let alone someone in another country. But in general, psych associations and a number of activist or support organizations will tend to keep records of therapists, and the latter are likely to serve you well if you want to find a therapist who is either part of or works extensively with your particular demographic.

Word of mouth can also be useful, though you should absolutely do some research of your own to figure out if anyone suggested is right for you - what works for one person might be the opposite of what someone else needs.
