Some people just aren't worth dealing with.

The best advice is simple. Find an artist whose style is fairly consistent and that you really like and be as descriptive as possible in the first message. If you generally like their style then there is less a need to nitpick.

Also don't spend more than you think it's worth. Find an artist whose pricing is fair for what they are giving you. If you think they are not worth the risk, then don't bother.

Above all just be polite. Nobody wants to be nagged by someone acting rude but you are paying for something so it's important both parties can find a middle ground and be as respectful as possible.
