I didn't make it through the first book because I felt like you, OP, but I'm guessing readers just didn't connect with Frank (tbf, Claire was struggling with that herself before she was transported to the past), associated Frank with his evil doppelganger, or fell for Jaime/Scotland/the romanticism of the doomed Jacobite cause.

I guess that's fair in the novel and for the character, but imo the actor in the show (Tobias -?) was so good at portraying Frank and Blackjack as two extremely different men, I didn't have any issue feeling sympathy/rooting for Frank while wanting to kick Blackjack's goddamn face in.
