Not OP, but want to narrow it down a bit? Both anime and lit have a crap ton of different genres. I can do a few anime recs, but without genre I really can't touch lit.

On general, I think FMA: Brotherhood is very accessible. It's a favorite of mine. On the more serious end, Monster is amazing and has a great soundtrack. Baccano is great, but I'm unsure how it would appear if you were just getting into anime. Natsume's Book of Friends is very soothing.
