I fall on the "annoyed" end of the spectrum, but it's less that the song is depressing and more that being lectured on humanity's shortcomings by John Fucking Lennon is ridiculous. And it is absolutely lecture. It's "What have you done," not "we." John Lennon decided to take some time out from sleeping around, physically abusing his wife and emotionally abusing his kids to lay some holiday guilt on the rest of us for not "wanting" peace and equality enough. Ugh.

But honestly, there are a lot of bad Christmas songs. The over the top reaction to this one is mostly due to overexposure. This is one of those songs that you cannot get away from between Thanksgiving and New Year, and it's not jingly enough to just skate over your consciousness as background noise. It's a vegan following you around in leather Birks to lecture you about over-consumption and the evils of the wool industry.
