I'm trying to figure out how to bridge the understanding gap here. Do you like fic at all?

The way I'm reading this secret, I don't think OP actually WANTS to understand. Pretty sure they just enjoy reveling in their fascination, apart from understanding.

Honestly, OP sounds like an anthropologist studying fans more than anything else.

Do you get deeply into anything else, like sports or politics or history?

If yes, then it's really just the same thing but with a different point of focus. There's not any true difference between wanting a ship to become canon and wanting your local team to win the championship - they both mean diddly squat in the grand scheme of things.

If no, then maybe some people just aren't wired to experience things the same way, and that's fine.

I don't think this is an issue of being in fandom or not. Some people get more invested than others. I read a lot of fanfiction and take part in fandom discussions and things but I'm really not very invested in ships and headcanons. They're just for fun. I can't be the only one.

You know how you get people who are suuuuper into a particular sports team? It's basically the same thing, just that all their passion and investment is funneled into fictional characters/settings instead.

All I know that for me reading about the ships I like makes me happy and that's all I'm here for when it comes to fandom, enjoyment.

I like discussing things I enjoy with other people who enjoy them to the degree that I do ( though I'd never, say, tatttoo art of a character on my ass or anything.)

I'm with you, OP. For some reason I enjoy F!S and fandom wank reports more than I ever enjoy reality TV. Shine on, you crazy diamonds.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-04 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
...why do YOU care?

Seriously, I do not understand the appeal of reality shows, which you compare this place to.

You have nothing to gain and likely have gained nothing from investing four whole years into watching wank at the same place.

So, why bother coming here at all?

I don't think it's that much of a mystery.

I think I understand what you're getting at. I very much do not care about fic, or shipping wars, or any of that. I'm happy to discuss the material, but that's it.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-04 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Most fans are like that with some fandoms and not with others. For example, I'm perfectly happy to watch and discuss, say, Stranger Things or Hannibal, without being super invested. But if we get started on X-Men, then all bets are off.

But maybe you're a fan of fandom?

(Anonymous) 2016-12-05 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way. I've watched TV shows and thought vaguely to myself "oh those two characters would make a good couple" but I never cared one way or another if it actually happened.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-05 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I really enjoy discussing fandom but where I stop is when people start to get so into it that they insult other people. THAT I don't think is worth it.

Debating different ideas is fine but there's no need to make it personal.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-05 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Why are you here then?

(Anonymous) 2016-12-05 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
Same tbh. Though I get the feeling that you try a lot harder than me to be nonjudgmental, OP. Fandom is borderline cringe fascination for me.
