"I've been a fan of Rosberg for five years (talented behind the wheel, speaks five languages, voted prettiest girlfriend in pit lane on multiple occasions, legacy driver). And like many fans I've been watching his, ah, feud with Lewis Hamilton since Mercedes signed Hamilton. Which, obviously, Hamilton kept winning. Until this year. Goddamn did Rosberg deliver this year.

The secret of this is not that I'm happy that the driver I support won the championship (obv). I'm just not sure my growing dislike of Hamilton is rooted in the fact that he's Rosberg's rival (which is perfectly reasonable), or if it's rooted in racism, and I dislike his flamboyant off-the-track antics because they're performed by a black man (it's not African-American, okay, he's British). So here I go questioning my moral compass, because the only thing I'm sure of here is that I definitely dislike Hamilton, and I hope it's not because I'm a racist asshole. (Though I also immensely disliked Sebastian Vettel when he was dominating the sport and acting like an asshole off the track, so hey, maybe there's hope for me.) Secret mostly because I think I'm overanalyzing. But I'm not sure."

Phew, I think I got it all right! :)

Well, considering Rosberg resigned after his victory, you might be able to examine how your feelings about Hamilton change now that he's not in a direct rivalry with Rosberg anymore. I think you are probably being too hard on yourself, but I get that it might worry you.

Rosberg seems like a really friendly guy. I don't follow the racing because it's not a sport I'm into, but we get a lot about his background and what he does on TV and the radio around here.

He does, doesn't he? I watch all of the Twitter videos he does in German (hey, I can pretend I'm practicing my second language and not being a creeper, right?), and he presents himself as friendly and likable. I haven't seen him break that character, even when he's obviously upset about the results of a race (he'll say something like, "I disagree with the decision, but it is what it is and now I have to move forward").

He's also pretty hilarious. After his victory, he actually INVITED HIMSELF into the townhall of his hometown via facebook (and he also requested a special type of food for breakfast, something that's a specialty around there - simply because apparently he'd never eaten it before. I know that stuff, I hope he didn't regret it haha!). With so many people, that might've seemed arrogant but he did it in such a funny way that everyone was all :D :D :D about it. The mayor was pretty happy about it all.

There was no precipitating event for that invitation video? Man, I thought I'd missed something. That IS pretty hilarious. :D

Yay and high five, Rosberg fan!

Don't worry: Hamilton's pettiness is a more than good enough reason for you to dislike him. He's a good driver and he does whatever (!) it takes to win, but sometimes one wants a little proof that someone is human and capable of empathy too.

It was funny - I was talking to a friend about Rosberg bitching about Hamilton backing him into a (probably) Red Bull's waiting clutches, and my friend said he didn't think Hamilton was that tactical of a driver. To which I said, I didn't say Hamilton would do it just that Rosberg would complain about it. And yet, that's exactly what Hamilton did - backed Rosberg right into the waiting triad of Vettel, Verstappen, and (slightly farther back), Ricciardo. But yeah, Hamilton was definitely being insanely petty at that point; I'm really not sad his engine blew up in Malaysia.

Hamiltons an arsehole - he's a great driver, but a mediocre racer and a terrible, terrible sportsman. He was and is the favoured one of the team, so got away with unethical racing and had the better car, and he began to believe his own hype until it turned him into someone I don't particularly like - so unless you know you have issues with being racially prejudiced, I'd say you were justified in disliking him.

I say this as a fan of Button.

Fellow Button fan!!! His last race this year was absolutely tragic, but he was a class act all the way. So much love for Button.

Button fan here too! Next year just won't be the same.

I have the opposite problem. I'm not sure whether I like Nico Rosberg on his own merits, or I just like him because I hate Lewis Hamilton with a passion. Everything about him makes me want to punch him in the face. Repeatedly.

I seem to have a thing for German's though. I was a massive Schumacher fan growing up, then Vettel, now Rosberg... I think I might have to turn in my English citizenship at this rate. :/

Vettel has been so incredibly entertaining this year. #VettelRadio might have been my favorite part of this season. I couldn't decide whether I was happy he was actually driving like a 4-time WDC in Abu Dhabi or sad that there was no overly technical bitching about blue flags over the radio.

Hamilton is insufferable and such a terrible sportsman; nothing to do with the color of his skin. His entitlement to, well, everything, is off the charts.

Hamilton is a spoilt little brat and you don't need any more reason than that to dislike him. And I say this as someone who can't stand Rosberg any more than I can stand Hamilton, though for different reasons. Rosberg has done plenty of dickish stuff on the track against Hamilton and it's easy to forget that the feud is only partly for show. Rosberg wasn't exactly thrilled Mercedes signed on a better driver than him, and he made it clear he wasn't happy that Mercede backed the better driver time and again. Rosberg won this year for one reason: Mercedes held Hamilton back because interest dies when one person wins too often. F1 needs new life and now it might happen next year with Rosberg's retirement.

If only the whiny child were pulled from the track for a season, 2017 could be the best year this decade. But I fear Verstaapen is here to stay a bit longer unless he actually kills someone.
