I'm not surprised this has to be said outright in this day and age, but, no, authors aren't morally obliged to do anything. They take no hippocratic oath, there's no licensing review board for authors. They can write whatever they want to write (and be taken to task for what they have written, get sued for libel, etc.), but they have no moral duty as writers to do anything. Even write (sorry, GRRM fans).
