the vast majority of women who are not naturally conventionally attractive

Okay, I have to ask what sort of women you're usually around because (IMO) the majority of women I see day-to-day are at least decently cute/pretty or average at worst. I can count on one hand the number of truly unattractive people I've seen in my life, female or male.

Which is what I always figured Hermione was, once she'd got her teeth fixed (and had got past the really awkward early teen phase). She is pleasantly average looking and scrubs up nicely when she can be bothered to make a special effort - like most people. But being Hermione, she usually can't, because intensive hair maintenance would cut into her reading time.
