It was fun, but I don't think it was as good as it should've been? For one, the plot itself wasn't that engaging. Was it about fantastic beasts? Not really, they hardly feature beyond the background and loosely initiating the plot (and, when necessary, moving it along deus ex machina). Was it about finding lost fantastic beasts? Again, sort of, but it felt more like a string of silly shenanigans rather than getting to know the aforementioned fantastic beasts. But that sort-of plot had to carry to drama that was really totally unrelated. There was SOME interesting worldbuilding for the wizarding world in 1920s NYC, but I think the concept was more fascinating than the execution. It didn't end up feeling as... lived in. There wasn't really a wizarding community much shown, more just people at work, and the sisters' apartment. I thought that was a shame.

Newt seemed to run more on quirk than character, and I wasn't too interested in the lead sister. Queenie and the muggle were super engaging, though, I loved their scenes. I did like the bad guy, at least when he was played by the normal actor. I don't have strong Johnny Depp opinions, but I just thought the character looked a little stupid when Depp played him, but he had a great charm with the other actor. Real shame, I would've loved to see Alexander make out with more dudes (I'm assuming a makeout scene with Dumbledore is coming). The orphans/Salem stuff felt a little tacky and over-the-top, though the main lead boy was pretty good and I'm hoping for the best for him in subsequent films.

Anyway, for the title, it really ought to have been more about fantastic beasts. Plus, I thought all the beasts looked kind of dumb except for the final bird creature. They just look like weird aliens and not like animals.

Oh my goodness. You know Colin Farrell's star has fallen when he's referred to as "the normal actor." :)

I agree that the creatures looked too... artificial in a way. I kept thinking that for the most parts, they looked like monsters straight out of a JRPG.
