Shortened names used for characters who would never use them throw me out of a fic. In my fandom, if Mairon and Melkor are calling each other Mai and Mel, it is an instant backbutton for me. No.

Especially since shortenings don't make sense in Tolkien, because that is not how nicknames get done in canon. A lot of the time, a shortening of an Elven word (of either Elven language) makes no sense, and names making sense and being relevant is a core value in Tolkien. Like for instance, a redhead gets nicknamed "Copper-top", despite it being longer than his given name (Maedhros, Russandol > Maitimo).

Surely they only do that in parodies? Humorous fan art? Not in an actual serious story. I legit shuddered just now.

I have a similar rule, but it applies at any age. DEAN IS ALREADY ONE SYLLABLE

^^^thank you
I mean if anything, a nickname for Dean would *lengthen* the name, not shorten it.

You haven't been around babies much.

I've never come across any, I guess I'm lucky. But yes, I would absolutely back away from any fic that did that.

Would De-De cross the line for you? >;) (TBH I'm surprised anyone can shorten such a short name...)

(Anonymous) 2016-12-09 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely. I had an abusive ballet teacher who called herself De-De (stole it from that movie with Anne Bancroft) and she was even grosser than SPN fandom.

King Dedede?

nayrt

(Anonymous) 2016-12-09 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
I could see it in a funny context: Sam gets tired of Dean calling him "Sammy" and so he starts calling him "Dee-Dee" in retaliation.

I never saw that when I still read spn fic but yeah, that'd make me back-button too.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-09 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
haha, at least he's not calling him dede

(Anonymous) 2016-12-09 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Is it mean to be pronounced like he's calling him "D"? Because that I could sort of tolerate.

(The way Faith used to call Buffy "B")

(Anonymous) 2016-12-09 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
I have a similar rule in fic but if it's characters call each other "bro" or "sis". i don't care what fandom, it just feels so weird for me and I close the tab as soon as it comes up.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-09 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, I call my brother 'bro' (same as him) :D, but we're both from London, if it's USA - never heard it in a none macho context :| .

Spike calling Xander "whelp" is my backbutton.

That's... some imagery there.

Sometimes shortening is unnecessary, but people do it in real life. But if it's not anything they do canonically, it's kind of annoying in fic, though I haven't watched Supernatural in years, so I suppose it could have happened.

My question is: why wouldn't you write that as D?

Also, general question to fic writers about (canonically) shortened names that have no conventional spelling: how do you do it? I've been reading The Flash fic and Barry Allen's first name gets shortened by cutting off the second syllable - I've read fic with it Bar, Barr, Bear, and Bare (same with Lisa Snart - Lis, Lise, Lize). Do you try to evoke the spelling of the original name or the correct pronunciation of the shortened name? I mean, conventional nicknames aren't always spelled like the names they come from - Mike/Michael, Amy/Amelia, etc.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-09 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
I've literally never seen this in a fic that wasn't bottom!Sam.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-09 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
he wants the De
