And it's still the most bashed pairing in the fandom, despite its popularity. Saying "I hate Zutara" will get you an army of agreement practically anywhere but a Zutara comm.

But the discussion post for the newest episodes in the ATLA fans comm had tons of people going "I don't like Maiko, I don't care for Maiko, I dislike Maiko" etc etc and many people talking about Zutara eventually happening or whatever.

I wouldn't know, because I recently left A_F over the general "if you like Zutara, you're watching the show with your ass" sentiment that pervades that community.

I've seen plenty of people in general comms talk about Zutara happening, but with the implication that they would lose all respect for Bryke if it did.

There's also a big difference between "I don't like this pairing" and "this pairing is ridiculous, how can anybody with their right mind ship it?"

No, these people were talking about it like it was going to happen. It wasn't bashing at all. Zuko/Mai did get bashed a ton.

Then again I'm saying this was one post, I haven't been in fandom for too long.

I still doubt anything gets bashed more than Mai/Zuko. 'Cause sure, Zutara gets bashed, but it also has a huge fanbase. So for everybody who bashes it, there's someone who'll scream about it becoming canon.

I don't see people jumping up to defend Maiko too much.

It only has a huge fanbase in its pairing-specific communities and forums, because a lot of Zutara fans stay out of or lurk in the general discussions where it gets bashed a lot (and by bashed, I mean "it makes no sense, htf can any intelligent person like it?").

In general communities, you will most certainly not be the only fan expressing dislike of it. Even extreme dislike. Which is why the fact that it's a secret for the OP puzzles me. Unless most of their friends like it or something, in which case if your friends are going to jump on you for something as dumb as pairing preferences? You need new friends.

I also haven't seen Maiko outright bashed as much analyzed as a relationship that didn't work very well. Which it didn't.

This isn't true. It does get bashed rather a lot, but the bashing that occurs around other pairings eclipses it by far (Mai/Zuko, anyone?).

In a comm for another pairing, what you're saying is correct. And there's a reason for that: Historically, people who prefer other pairings have had to deal with vitriolic hatred from the Zutara fandom as a whole (not everybody who ships it, obviously, but a large portion of it). Bashing, flaming, and everything up to accusations of pedophilia (wtf, fandom). That's died off recently, but the bitterness remains.

I mean even in the general communities, and not just on LJ. It's the reason I barely lurked at A_F before I finally left. You know it's bad when "Zutara sucks, please stop shipping it" sentiments show up in a friending meme, FFS.

All I'm saying is that "I hate Zutara with a burning passion" is not a sentiment unpopular enough to warrant a secret.
