18. I can see your point, but heterosexuality is the norm. Most people watching a show about heterosexuality aren't going to form opinions on it simply by watching it, because they are heterosexual. However, since there are so many stupid people in the world, they're going to form negative opinions and feed into stereotypes on bi (or homo) sexuality simply because they watched Tila Tequila.

Basically. I'd never even heard of Tila Tequila until my mom started complaining about how bisexuals are sluts and basing this 'fact' entirely on having seen a few minutes of Tila Tequila and a few GGW commercials. :/

She doesn't 'ruin' a sexuality, but things like that in the media tend to just further aggravate negative stereotypes. 'Reality TV' in general tends to do this.

Oh god, if that's the case, then I guess all campy gay guys and butch lesbians are further aggravating negative stereotypes too, so let's hate them!

Baaaaw baaaaw, I have no idea who this Tila chick is, but a quick Wiki-ing tells me that she gets a show where she gets to mack on all the hot crazy people she wants. And I can't blame her for wanting to live the dream.

But most people are smart enough to realize that all gay people and all straight people are not alike. There are just as many feminine lesbians as masculine ones (and being masculine =/= bad) and there are plenty not-campy gay men that most people know. However, most bisexuals people are exposed to are people who are in the "I don't care as long as I get laid" camp, instead of "I love and respect both/all gender identities, and find them beautiful" camp. There is a distinction, and while sex is awesome and people should do it however they want it, the mainstream looks down on people who "can't choose" or who get more, better sex than they do.

The stereotype of "bisexual = slut" or "bisexual = straight girl teasing boys to fuck them" or "bisexual = actually closeted gay man" is REALLY STRONG. You would have no idea what I go through even on my liberal campus being bi. Even in the queer center on campus, I'm not respected. I'm the butt of jokes, even though I'm a very loyal, monogamous (not that polyamory is bad, of course), old-fashioned romantic sorta gal. If people wanted to joke that I'm old-fashioned despite my sexual openness and kinkiness, I'd be fine with that--but acting like my orientation automatically makes me some sort of disease-ridden bimbo just ANGERS me, and it IS a prevalent view.

I never realized the bi-bashing that goes on in the world was so bad until I came out. Lesbians often refuse me because "I'll just leave them for a guy" and some straight men act like I'm a sextoy to live out all their fantasies. I'm so blessed I met someone that loves me and knows me instead of stereotyping me.

Uh, I'm bi too. I am well aware of the stereotype. But no, you are not more mis-represented than our homohomo brethren. They still got shit to deal with, we got shit to deal with, every minority EVER has shit to deal with. And yet, you don't see fandom secrets about how 50 Cent ruined black people.

[identity profile] t3h-toby-chan.livejournal.com 2008-04-27 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Baaaww, indeed. I never said I hate her for it; that was the OP. I dislike the show, but that's nothing new with me and stupid MTV series'. My point was just that this type of thing aggravates the stereotypes, much like widely publicized campy gays you mentioned or whathaveyou. That's all quite annoying, mostly when dealing with the results. I never said I hated anyone for it. :/
