2. Well, they kind of made it into a British accent. If you watch the pilot for Season One, it's decidedly Indian, and then it gradually devolves into a generic English one afterwards. In some interview- can't remember which- Ramamurthy said he was asked to gradually change Mohinder's accent because the British accent was "more sexy." So much for authenticity, huh?

Ah, frankly, why would this be about "authenticity"? There is no law that Indian people have to speak English with a stereotypical Indian accent. I know enough people who aren't British, but speak English with a British accent instead of their national standard, because - they like it.

Oh, I agree with you completely that accents don't always have much to do with the "national standard", depending upon the person, but it really incensed me that they changed his accent for sex appeal. It seemed kind of... flaky, for a show that sometimes deals with pretty profound issues. (I emphasize "sometimes".) Perhaps authenticity wasn't the word I was looking for.

The well educated/wealthy people in Indian speak in an somewhat English sounding accent (when they're speaking in English anyway). It was under the rule of the British Empire for somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 years. So whoever had secret #2 isn't completely right in saying it isn't British. In an indirect way it is. Though he wouldn't have gotten it from being in England, and he wouldn't use modern British slang.
