People usually forget the fact that the 8th espada was also a hell of a lot stronger than the 9th. Aaroniero's only power was having the strength of lots of hollows in him. Wow. Sure, he had Kaien, too, but that's completely useless against anyone but Rukia. Szayel on the other hand could limit Renji's power, couldn't be touched by Uryuu's power, could regenerate himself, used clones and voodoo dolls, and could be reborn after dying. Rukia wouldn't have lasted half a minute against him.

Sure, Rukia's gotten stronger, but she's way behind the rest of the team (except maybe Chad). (And I don't see how angsting a lot then getting saved and being thrown around by her saviors in humiliating ways develops inner strength, but whatever.)

The Espada are numbered in strength. Yes, the 8th Espada was stronger than 9th, but only by one place. Aaraoneiro was still the 9th strongest Espada. And his powers included the powers of all of the hollows he had devoured including their own moves and strengths and what have you. And yes, he did have Kaien. And yes, he did use that against Rukia. But here's the thing. While Szayel might have limited Renji's power physically, Noveno limited Rukia's powers by mentally disabling her, or trying to. That is almost a more difficult hurdle to overcome. Yet she overcame that and she overcame the fact that he was the 9th Espada and that he had Kaien's memory of her moves. She was fighting against someone who knew exactly what she could do and to what extent she could do them. Renji and Ishida, on the other hand, had that to their advantage.

I think that's where you're wrong. She's clearly behind Ichigo. She's behind Renji, sure. But Ishida? Orhime? Chad? Rukia's levelling up as much as them. And we've barely even seen the hint of her powers. She just spent the last 3 months having her powers sucked out of her by Urahara's gigai. Before that, even, it was said that she could have easily been fukutaichou, like Renji, if Byakuya hadn't put in a request that she shouldn't be. She had strength. She developing. What she needs now is the time to develop strategy and train more. She's not by any means weak.

As for her angsting, it's once again the whole concept of dealing and facing things that hurt you deeper than a physical wound. Having to bear the Kuchiki name and the Kuchiki pride and know that you're going to be executed for something you believe in while still feeling guilt that you could never live up to your brother's expectation and the fact that you killed one of the only people who had cared about you? That takes a lot of inner strength to deal with and accept. And yet she was willing to take the responsibility for those actions and willing to accept her fate. That's what makes her so strong and beautiful.

You seem to be assuming that the places are equally spaced out, which is faulty. There aren't set levels between the rankings, rather they are just ordered according to strength, from strongest (at 1st) up. It seems that there was quite a gap in power between Aaroniero and Szayel.

And please don't forget that the fact that Rukia killed Aaroniero had a lot to do with pure luck. Not to belittle her poise and sacrifice towards the end there, but if his vital point hadn't been in range of her zanpakotō, Rukia would have been toast. Honestly, she basically was toast anyway, but as things turned out she at least managed to take him with her.

Not quite. It was never stated that she had vice-captain-level abilities, but those equal to a seated officer. That's a lot more vague, granted, but in my mind I could see her being anywhere from 5th seat up, but she could be as low as 20th. (For reference, Hanatarō is a 7th seat.) We don't know. (Technically, yeah she could have had vice-captain-level abilities, but honestly I doubt she's there yet.)

I get that you like Rukia. I like her a lot too. I just don't think you should twist facts in order to make her look better than she really is. I like her because of her personality and inner strength, not because she's the bestest at anything ever. Because, you know. She isn't. And that's okay. Really.

The point of fighting the Ninth alone was that Rukia was able to overcome the inner conflict, not necessarily just the outer. It took loads of strength for her to look Aaroniero in the eye, knowing he had Kaien inside of him and that she'd put him there, and then to kill him. No one else has had to deal with anything like that.

Rukia's entire appeal is that she's strong mentally, not physically. She doesn't need combat strength in order to get along, and she doesn't want it. She's one of the only people in Bleach who is satisfied with her power as it is, and doesn't go around looking for fights in order to boost it, nor does she angst that she's unable to best anyone. She trains and she does her duty as a shinigami, and that's enough for her.
