For better or worse, some people aren't afraid of being assaulted. No one cares about being called a cracker because someone who calls you a cracker is unlikely to assault you, but if someone calls you the N-word, there's a decent chance they'll attack you. Using the N-word on TV isn't a problem in and of itself, but when TV establishes some people as N-words who're okay to mock and look down on, that increases the risk of violence in real life. If you're not threatened with violence, you may not understand this, in which case the language people use doesn't seem like a very big deal.
