To clarify, she doesn't have a full-time job, let alone two; her parents/financial aid pays for everything.

She's still being smart - getting her degree now, rather than waiting some unspecified time, is the best thing she can do.

If they were in the same city, and the Mom was babysitting, I wouldn't see it as a big deal, but leaving your infant newborn in another city? All week?

(She's trying to finish a minor, she technically graduates in spring.)

*shrug*
I, and many others here, don't see it as an issue. And it's her choice, and if it works for her, it works for her.

If she's your friend, the best you can do is be supportive, and *not* judgemental. You've no real idea what she's thinking or feeling, or how hard it might be for her.

Yep. Works for *her*. Personally I would put the baby first but whatever, I guess I'm crazy.

Also, where's the dad in all this? If he's still alive and not a toxic asshole, he needs to get his finger out and muck in. Between them they could probably make it work.

As unideal as this situation is, how is this not putting the child first IN THE LONG RUN?

By finishing a minor? OP says her major will be done by spring. BEFORE baby.

If it's something she;s already paid for, it'd be fucking irresponsible to throw that money away.

Universities have support for parents. They WANT people to graduate. I would be stunned if she actually had no option to defer.

Who knows? Maybe he sucks, maybe she hates him, maybe she'd rather not, maybe he doesn't know, maybe he already said 'fuck that'. If the plan doesn't include the dad, there's probably a reason.

why do you hate people so much for not being you? you don't sound very pleasant

"you don't sound very pleasant" - said to someone suggesting that it's not unreasonable to expect a mother to spend time with her newborn
