The Book of A Thousand Days OR Princess Academy by Shannon Hale

PA in particular can be easily dismissed because of the title, but Hale is an absolute genius at writing books that are technically YA but have a lot of nuance: they both have some really cool worldbuilding and unique ideas, and the protagonists are very interesting and likable.
