I liked the book enough up until that subplot. What the fuck was even the point of that? Also, did you get the feeling the author just couldn't help himself in certain parts, where it would have been better to leave certain things up to interpretation? The film struck such a fine balance between delicate and violent, and to be honest I think the oblique strokes serve the social realism better.
