I didn't know that, but it isn't surprising that they came up with the term themselves to make their views sound more palatable.

Yeah, they are trying to hide their motives and beliefs. Alt-right sounds like, "Oh. Right wing but alternative. Historically, alternative groups have been pretty liberal leaning. So liberal leaning conservatives? Cool."

And that is why we can't forget what they REALLY are.

So basically they're trying to control the conversation about the language of what they are.

What unsettles me is how successful they've been at it, too - I didn't know better until anon told me.

They have been doing it since the mid-1970s. It has just taken until now for the mainstream liberals and the mainstream to notice. They've been invading and gerrymandering every elected position in the land, devaluing language, devaluing things like liberal arts degrees, devaluing basic decency, infiltrating institutions, and making sure that their political vision is the only one acceptable to talk about since the mid 1970s and now the liberal mainstream has woken up and found itself forty years behind the game and may never be able to make up the ground.
