Yeah, grimdark is not what I think of when I think of Madoka. But then I have friends who see the ending as being much more tragic than I do, so they probably see the series as being darker than I do.

The ending was the least tragic part of that whole thing.

That's what I think too. Honestly the ending feels kind of cathartic to me. Madoka finds a way out of what seemed like an impossible situation and solved the witch situation at the same time.

She finally beat the system.

Until the movies, at least.

Nerds gonna nerd

Madoka is pretty dark but I sometimes think people don't realize that magical girl series can get dark and have dark themes.

Huh, I actually get a 'lighter' feel from Claymore than from MM.

I was trying to name a grimdark series that doesn't have rape in it. I've thankfully never seen rape in a Madoka wannabe, so it wouldn't make sense to compare them to Berserk or something.

They're just so different in style and tone. Madoka is dark beneath a cutesy exterior, so I think a good comparison would be something like Narutaru, which looks like Digimon but would be stupidly, unforgivably bleak even without all the rapes (which admittedly it contains).

Oh man, I was SO disappointed in Yuki Yuuna. I wanted to like it, I really did, but it was more grimdark for the sake of being grimdark, and then the ending just pulled the fangs from it. Most of the story was just cutesy slice of life that didn't even raise tension or anything.
My issue is that since Madoka, people seem to think "dark magical girls" means "make it cutesy and then whump". There's no subtlety or payoff to any of these, and this season there's that Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku which is just.... weak.

Because Madoka invented dark Mahou Shoujo series, right?

Jesus.
