...wait, how is Cheryl sexualized???

(Anonymous) 2016-12-15 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Because when she's eating we get a close-up of her lips and she's blushing. That's literally what people consider sexualization and enough to write off an entire character's value.

Look, I love that ORAS Courtney and Shelly (man, just ORAS Aqua and Magma in general) got their time to shine, but I'm never not going to be salty that Hilda (and to a lesser extent, Lyra and Bianca) didn't show up.

Yes that's true, and I would love to see them as well. But people act like the series has NO female characters of value and that simply isn't true. They're throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

I can forgive not seeing Lyra and Bianca because they appeared in the main anime. Same for May, same for Dawn. Lucas and Brendan had cameos in the opening segments of movies, so that counts.

I'm with you on being sorry we didn't see Hilda, though. She's not even my favourite but I'm sorry we missed seeing Hilda, Nate and Rosa. The gen 5 protags are some of my faves.

I liked it but I am forever salty about Hilda not showing up. But damn, if I didn't rewatch the B&W episode over and over. That one was really well made.

Maybe it's because we named her Hilda...*forever salty that Whitlea isn't the canon name*

OP here. Years and years ago I submitted a secret about how I don't get why everyone is down on the name Hilda because it's an awesome name. I out her head over a picture of a valkyrie.

I stand by my support of the name Hilda.

I still hate that name. Sorry. It's boring as hell to me.

To me, it feels like the Generations series is pandering more to its male audience than a unisex audience. Since the beginning of the Pokemon series in general, a good portion (but not all) of the female characters that have shown up in Generations have gotten a lot of attention from the Pokemon community as "waifus" and reading the comments section of the Youtube videos doesn't really help. While watching some of the ORAS and Cheryl's episode, I did kind of get an awkward vibe from them (especially Courtney; definitely did not read "yandere" from her in-game dialogue).

I'd have liked to see Hilda, Dawn, and May, but so much for that. As a female Pokemon fan, I relate to them, and it feels like Generations is saying the true canon heroes are the male MCs.

Generations is only canon to itself though. People insist that it means only the specific games shown are canon and the other version isn't but that's equally bizarre.

Heck, the Aqua episode can't even be canon to Generations because if it happened, literally nothing else can.

Out of curiosity, why would showing only the male player characters pander to a male audience? Plenty boys play as the girl and vice versa.

I'm curious about that too. Unless the game has chara customisation I keep choosing the male heroes. I couldn't have been happier about seeing the male protags in movement.
