I just remembered that I had the novelization of the movie (definitely not to be confused with the original book) and unless I totally forgot, that part isn't in it. So the weirdness might have something to do with it being thrown into the script later on.

The whole movie ending is changed. In the book, her father isn't even alive. The father alive thing started with the Shirley Temple version, I believe. But even that version didn't do the whole chimney sweep thing.

Oh I know, I've read the original book too and like it much more than both movies. But the novelization I'm talking about was based almost word for word on the 1993 movie.
