I want to buy things from small businesses to support them rather than Walmart/Target/big stores, but so many of the ones I have dealt with this year have shitty customer service and it's really putting me off. I am not a pushy asshole, I am not an impatient jerk who wants it yesterday, I am not one of those "the customer is always right even when s/he's 100% wrong" idiots! I just want my orders to be delivered in a timely fashion and if there's a problem or a delay I want to be notified ASAP. Is that too much to ask all of a sudden????

The restaurant we are going to doesn't have alcohol. How will I survive my work's Christmas dinner? My boss offered to buy us all some mini-bottles to drink (he and his wife are carpooling us) but I am not sure how trashy it might be to down like 3 mini-bottles of vodka in a parking lot before eating an expensive meal.

... it doesn't have alcohol? That's really strange to me, and I'm not even that big a drinker.

Right? And it is a steak place! With no alcohol!!!!

Is it a BYOB place where the restaurant doesn't have a license to serve but you can bring your own?

Around here it's quite common for a lot of Italian places to not serve liquor, but they'll open a bottle of wine for you if you bring it.

It is not. It is just a weird steak place that doesn't serve alcohol for some reason.

Sadly, poor customer service is one of the reasons small businesses get their lunch eaten by large chains. Excellent customer service is how they stay afloat despite large chains.

On the opposite side of the coin. I'm one person doing my darndest to run an etsy shop. I sew everything myself. Yes, I know you need it by Christmas. So do the other 50 people who ordered. I've spent more time at my sewing machine than I have sleeping and eating and spending time with loved ones.

At least I'm down to the last ten orders and I've put up my "At this point it ain't getting made before Christmas" announcement.

I feel you, fellow Etsy seller. Over the last couple years it's really started to feel like Etsy shoppers have been lulled into forgetting that we're hand-makers, not mass producers, so even if it's so easy to one-click shop for that perfect gift, it doesn't come from Amazon in one day. It comes from actual individuals actually making shit.

I've taken to only putting finished items in my shop, because when I renewed listings where I only had the fabric somewhere in the workroom but still had to do all the sewing before shipping, it burned me out so hard.

Normally I can keep up alright, each big thing takes about an hour to make and I keep 'kits' ready aside from pre-made stuff. But holiday orders tore through my pre-made and my kits and I was ordering supplies and having to wait. I don't mind doing the job, but I never know if people are going to order 10 of design A and 1 Design B, or vice versa, or a dozen of C and 0 A&B and at this point I can't yet afford to keep a backstock of 20 of each design.

I found out an old friend of mine died yesterday. Someone I might have loved, a bit. I guess I mentioned him on F!S maybe a week or two ago. Someone I lived with for a while as a teenager.

I hadn't talked to him in a long time. He wound up in prison at some point after I knew him, never stayed out for very long afaik. Really a piece of shit. Assault, robberies, abusing his girlfriends, you name it.

I can't say he was ever a good person, but he was kind to me. He was the only person who knew I was gay for a long time. We fucked around a lot, and sometimes he'd get really sappy. At the time I thought he was just being sweet to like... be nice to me??? But looking back on everything I think maybe he loved me a little bit, too.

He's not the first friend from back then that's died, but this is fucking me up a lot.
