I know what you mean

For me, the thing that could turn an ok story into something in bad taste is when the story describes someone being lustful to the point of wanting to abused or degraded like trash as a bitch or a whore. I know that most of the authors on AO3 are women too, so they definitely should know better too.

Things like that would disgust for a long time, unless I go and find a replacement story that isn't like that. Maybe I should leave a short comment on those fics to let them know that others don't care for that one line in a story. It might work out, and the author will take it as constructive criticism. It might not work out, and the author will double down and start piling on whatever phrase it is that I found distasteful. Who knows?

Either way, I think that voicing discomfort about things in stories is important to help lessen that disgust that you get. Heck, having a voice in general to speak against things that go against you is important IRL.

But yeah, you're not the only one that gets thrown off by single lines that imply something gross or degrading.

Okay so I can get how this is gross when clueless horny guys who are only into their own fetishes and don't know a thing about want women want write this. But if women are writing it, maybe it's because ...um...dirty talk is...uh a kink? It's a kink women have. And you know a lot o people have this cool think where they're able to draw a line between kinks they like in fiction versus in real life.

So fuck off with your "they should know better". It's okay that it rubs you the wrong way, but that doesn't mean other people are wrong to have that kink and write it.. They don't need to "know better", you need to know better than to tell people they're wrong to have a kink in a fictional setting.

Thank you!

The annon above can fuck off with their self-righteous bullshit along with the high horse that they rode in on.

+1

Degrading dirty talk not being your thing is fine, and wanting people tag for it is fine, but "you should know better" is so condescending, geez.

+2000

Some people should learn Your Kink Is Not My Kink And That's Okay a little more often instead of kinkshaming others' kinks while also being a condescending snit.

Bless you and thank you.

I really hate when someone calls their lover a slut or whore. Loathe it.

No, I don't comment about that. It's... a little bad feeling goes a very long way, yeah? I don't think I have enough of a rapport with the writers that I could critique that in a way that isn't hurtful, so if they tagged reasonably accurately I just shrug and move on, and kudos the stories I like.

SA

I respect that other people enjoy writing and reading dirty talk. It's just a personal anti-kink. A squick, if you will.

That's a good way to put it. Thank goodness you're respectful about it.

DA Yeah, because the most important thing is kinks and not sexist, degrading language most often used against women, or to disrespectfully feminize men. Sure. That's not a problem at all. Talk about patronising.

SIGH

Tagging is an awesome power.

OP

(Anonymous) 2016-12-15 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah I'm not really into that either. One of my fandoms right now has a big thing with a certain character being super slutty and they also seem to cross this with size kink a lot too which is another squick of mine (possibly because IRL I am the exact opposite of a size kink person, give me an average dick or smaller please!) and the writing often crosses over into the territory I think you're talking about.

Unfortunately this particular fandom isn't great at tagging for this kind of shit either. I was reading a fic the other day when suddenly it devolved into "you're such a little slut aren't you (Character Name)? You want everyone to see what a loose slut you are!" and it was just like the triple whammy of untagged, wildly OOC for BOTH characters, and completely out of nowhere.

Yeeeah.

I don't say anything usually because I mean in the end YKINMKATO, but when it's untagged like that it really pisses me off. I'm not reading this stuff to read OOC "free use" or "fandom bicycle" fantasies, generally I'm looking for an author who can capture the canon personalities and then add in-character smut to the mix. :/

This is what I'm looking for, too.

"Maybe I should leave a short comment on those fics to let them know that others don't care for that one line in a story."

Just keep in mind if you do, the author may respond with a "But I do find it insanely hot, and as the writer in charge of this fic, I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with you. Thanks for the feedback, though!" And I am a woman, for the record.

Degradation and humiliation are actual kinks, which some individuals in healthy relationships indulge in. Even if your imagination can't stretch that far, it is true.
