Re: Musicals/theatre thread
I've seen dozens of musicals, from blockbuster hits to obscure things from the 1930s. I've seen Stephen Sondheim's Follies four times and Company (see icon) three times. My favorite shows are probably Company, 1776 (saw a great limited-run production that happened to be going the week of 9/11, so it's such an emotional memory for me; plus we watch the movie every 4th), Grey Gardens (saw it on Broadway!!), and City of Angels (such a smart, tightly written show; gorgeous sexy jazz score).
But of course that's leaving off many, many cool things. I love that I've seen some of the shows Cole Porter wrote for Ethel Merman, like Panama Hattie (1940) and Red Hot and Blue (1935). I've seen Sondheim's early solo musical Saturday Night (1955)-- and I saw that before I ever saw Sunday in the Park with George, or Sweeney, or A Little Night Music. (Of course I was already familiar with those shows' cast albums and PBS filmed versions.) Or seeing R&H's Allegro (1947) long before The Sound of Music, for instance.
I have a list of just about every show I've seen in theatres since 1997 (Oklahoma! when I was 8), it's crazy-long by this point. Tons of plays too of course. Lots of Shakespeare, Stoppard, and Tennessee Williams.
