Not really, it's on a par with Sara pretending to put some sort of Indian curse on Lavinia. In other words, inane.

The pretend curse is inane as far as it adds nothing to the story, but it's something that a person could easily do and is pretty in-character for movie-Sara. It doesn't require any suspension of disbelief like Minchin becoming a chimneysweep does.

I guess to me it only requires you imagine a scenario where the school collapses because (a) Miss Minchin no longer has her sister and the free (or nearly free) labor of Sara and Becky to rely on and (b) when the story of how she mistreated a pupil who's fallen on hard times got out, the reputation of her school was ruined and parents pulled their daughters out.
