My theory is that he played the Doctor in a fairly remote, distant, alien way, and so there was a very different vibe about him. He's always been an attractive fella.

All I can think is I hope the reason they cast him for the role is because he's a good actor, because I am not impressed by the visual match.

is he wearing a wig in this show? I seem to recall he had a giant alien forehead but it doesn't look half bad in this pic

Don't think so. I suspect the different hairstyle (brushed up in an almost pompadour like fashion vs. parted and falling over his face more) in Doctor Who makes his forehead look giant.
