Super simplified off the top of my head: After the war, Germany was divided in West/East, with the Eastern half joining the Soviet bloc. Berlin was in East Germany, and they can't very well secede the huge prosperous capitol to the Soviets. So Berlin got an internal West/East division too. Eventually in 1961, the Soviets built a border wall to prevent people escaping to the Western half. So that's what's up.
