The British commander, Montgomery, warned of exactly this happening and advocated a push to Berlin to beat the Red Army but Dwight was too cautious and thought that the Soviets would relinquish most of the ground they gained post war. Which I suppose technically they did, forty or so years post war...

I'm not sure it makes sense to assume that it would have been trivial for the Western Allies to have reached Germany first if they had only tried.

Also there are all kinds of assumptions wrapped up in "relinquishing territory" there that I'm not sure are supportable. It's much more complex.
