The Riley hate is a little OTT and it may relate to shipping and that people found his introductory season and him as a character boring. I mainly liked him for Buffy because at the beginning, it didn't come with the host of issues her and Angel had (like a several hundred year old vampire hitting on a teenager, and that's not even getting into the fact that he loses his soul when they have sex and has killed a bunch of people.)

Buffy needs someone who is able to keep up with her but also has hints of normal to him. Riley could have worked or someone similar.

The reason I didn't like Riley was because he had issues with her as a woman being stronger than him. He needed her to be feminine and to "need him" when she had to be an adult and care for Dawn and needed to be strong. He didn't really care about what she actually needed so much as he cared about his own macho pride.

For the record, I liked him in season 4. One of the few things in season 4 I liked. But he started to bug me in season 5.

Well yeah, that's where I kind of consider the writers to have ruined him because I felt like they were essentially coming up with reasons to destroy the relationship.

It's why I'm not completely Team Riley but still considered it better at the beginning then Angel or Spike.

Fucking godamn Riley for wanting to comfort and support Buffy during a difficult time. That asshole.

If you actually care about someone and want to comfort and support them, you do what they need you to do. Not what you think they should need you to do. So yeah, Season 5 Riley was kind of an asshole, for that and many other reasons.
