This gives me hope! I fell behind during the Kitty arc in S3 and then couldn't catch up so didn't watch at all for the longest time. I'm finally getting to the end of S4 and it's been so damn good that I was worried S5 would suck. I will definitely have to find a way to get my hands on it as soon as possible.

Oh yeah you should! So far it's been quieter plot-wise, mostly quiet Joan and Sherlock relationship development, so that's a shift from all the moriarty drama in S4. But I like that.
And what I really like about Shinwell is that he's Joan's friend. Sherlock has lots of eccentric acquaintances, but Joan? It's kind of intriguing from her, and makes me wonder what about him led her to maintain their connection.
