Honestly, I think World of Final Fantasy pulled off what Tales of the Abyss was trying to do. Abyss tries to make it the MC's fault a whole bunch of people die, but it seems like it's more the fault of the villain who manipulated him. In World, it's abundantly clear just how much horrible shit is a direct result of the protagonists' actions.
