What is the soulbond/fictive presence method of writing?

(Anonymous) 2016-12-17 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Pretentious bullshit from which one should back away slowly.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-17 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
... maybe it's "only write characters that you can strongly identify with / feel you understand deeply" ?

(Anonymous) 2016-12-17 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT

More like "I believe this character exists in my head as its own entity and I write down what they think and say and believe, none of it is under my control as a writer. The character writes its own story and the real one is in my head. Sometimes it doesn't 'want' to cooperate and I have to negotiate with it and I don't call this 'writer's block', it's the character's fault"

Backing away slowly like the other anon said is the best idea.

I don't mind when people use that kind of language as shorthand for subconscious decisions about characters. That sort of thing happens to me, where I realize that all the little choices I've made about a character as I was writing mean that something I have planned will no longer work the way I wanted, and if someone wants to phrase that as the character not cooperating, it's a little precious but I can see the fun in it. But I can't deal with people who mean it seriously.

I have never heard anyone not mean it seriously and I've heard many people say that stuff. For a while I thought they were all kidding and it was obviously an exaggeration of the writing process right? Nope

Anne Rice, Laurel K. Hamilton, and Stephanie Meyer used this kind of language routinely, as I remember, and so did one or two ficcers I recall crossing paths with in my fandom days. Interestingly, Rice and Hamilton are noted for the shitfits they've thrown in reaction to criticism, Stephanie Meyer didn't take at all kindly to it either, and the fan ficcers I'm thinking of were some of the most crit-averse people I've ever encountered in fandom, which is ironic seeing that they were also spoilers.

Fuck, that should be "they were also sporkers." Autocorrect at work.

da

Oh, that's kind of interesting, actually. I wouldn't say that my characters are real or exist in my head, but when I'm writing, I always feel like I'm just typing out a script that someone else has already put in my head, and that's why I find it so difficult to change my characters once I've set down what they're like. I don't believe that, of course, I just very often get this feeling that I have no real control over how my writing turns out.

You see it a lot in roleplay

"XDXD naruto wont come out to play tonight"
"It's fine if you don't feel up to tagging."
"oh no it's not me, its my muse. i'm poking him with a stick but he won't play, he's mad at something one of my other muses did in my head from earlier"
"Uuuuuuuh ok. I'm fine with continuing tomorrow if you feel up to it."
"its not me, it's naruto! he's upset sakura shipped with someone else in this RP. im going to try offering him cookies to see if he'll come out"
"Um"

I would assume it has something to do with a strong soulbond-like connection to a character that inspires you to write about them.
Or they might consider the character a real independent person who exists (!??) somewhere (!?!?) and who actually communicates with them to tell them what to write? Like Jesus I guess?

One step away from fictionkin type delusions.
