Re: What fact did you believe for years, only to find out it wasn't true?

I thought pandas were related to raccoons and hyraxes were related to mice. Turns out pandas really are bears, but hyraxes are related to elephants. Also found out the Australian army once lost a war against emus. Fun day at the zoo.

I didn't specifically think they were related to raccoons, but people did tell me many times as I was growing up that pandas weren't bears. Then I take some zoology classes and yup, turns out they're actually bears.

They actually are relatively closely related to raccoons...due to being bears. Raccoons and bears are basically second-cousins.

But, yes, they were thought to be more closely related to raccoons, due to some anatomical bits that they have that are unique among bears, but more common in musteloids - which group includes raccoons and red pandas - as well as mustelids and skunks. (I can't remember just what those features are, offhand.)

Well, uh...yes. I did say I took some zoology classes.

I think they may have been thinking of the Red Panda, which is related to Raccoons.

No, back in the day (the 80s), people thought Giant Pandas were actually closely related to Red Pandas, not just a coincidence of name.

The emu war is a brilliant story.
