#52

Sometimes I feel like the only one who honestly doesn't see this "subtext" between the two. Making Wilson a woman doesn't change their relationship at all to me (though it would change House's character), and while I don't have anything against anyone who does see it, I get tired of being scoffed at or made to feel boring by people who are genuinely convinced they're going to wind up together on the show. So it's sort of a double-edged sword.

(My own secret: It's condescending of me, I know, but sometimes with those people (the rabid ones), I feel like I'm watching the slightly slow/socially awkward girl in class make an ass out of herself all the time without being aware of how uncomfortable everyone else is when she opens her mouth.)

I tell you, internetz, it's hard out there for a non-slasher.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but people on both sides can be unpleasant and narrow-minded, which can raise tensions and an increase of bias between them that normally might not have been there.

I am being incredibly sarcastic. Yes, as you say, people on both sides of the argument can be unpleasant and narrow-minded, but those people need to calm the hell down, as House is not srs bzns, slashy or no. However, I agree with the poster: not only is the ridicule annoying, it's also rather stupid, since the show itself frequently and openly plays around with House/Wilson subtext (see the last episode and the line, "I've decided you could do worse than a female proxy for me," which pretty much proves the poster's point). As subtext, this may be ignored at the viewer's will, but to say it only exists in the minds of delusional fangirls is unreasonable.

That is my opinion. I will quit with the teal deer now. *sits down*

All right, to be fair, I've stayed out of most of the House fandom to avoid debates like these, but I don't see things on one side of the equation being significantly better or worse than the other. BOTH sides can come off as raving lunatics and delusional fangirls, to say nothing of hyper-sensitive and judgemental. The sniping and constantly having to prove one side right by proving the other wrong ultimately proves nothing other than some people can't enjoy something unless their personal preference for an outcome to what is a subplot at most comes to fruition.

Subtext is a tricky thing because it's subjective: what one person may see as obvious homoerotic subtext, another person may see as obvious platonic friendship. Fan opinion doesn't make something true or false, nor should it, and what makes something enjoyable for one person doesn't hold true for another. One person could look at all the lines like "I've decided you could do worse than a female proxy of me" and see it as the writers affirming homoerotic subtext, while others can look at it as the writers poking good-natured fun at a well-known fan opinion. Saying it's terribly obvious that the writers are throwing hints to support the House/Wilson romance is just as irritating to those who genuinely don't see the pairing as the reverse is for those who do.

Or, in short: Support your pairing of choice, it doesn't matter to me, just don't imply I'm an idiot for reading all the lines and subtext differently.

Er, I don't really watch House, and I don't take part in fandom at all, but weren't there a discussion recently about an interview where it was said that while there's not going to be a relationship between House and Wilson, the creators put the subtext there on purpose?

I had to hunt around for what you were talking about, and yeah, his exact quote was: "I have to confess, on occasion we’ve thrown in a line to encourage that. I don’t think we’re really going down that road." That does seem to be an odd thing to do if you never intend to follow through on it. To me, the lines always just seemed like playful little acknowledgements of the writers' awareness of that faction of the fanbase, but not necessarily an encouragement of it-- a little poke meant in fun to get a laugh, nothing more. Now I wish he'd clarified or explained that statement more because his intentions there seem odd and contradictory as it stands.

That's where I draw the line with H/W. I honestly don't think they'll end up together. And if they did, it would be in some weird pseudo-sex dream/hallucination that House has or something. I like being able to draw my own conclusions and seeing other people's take on how they could get together.

I don't begrudge anyone for shipping another pairing. And that's what's great about this show is that, at one time or another, there's umpteen different pairings that have become plausible or can be plausible on the show. At one point, House/Cameron could have happened, we've had hints that House/Cuddy has happened in the past and could, very well happen again.

I don't understand why people have to be so uppity. I can understand freaking out every once in awhile (I know I will most certainly be freaking out after tonight's episode!), but constantly and over such a thing as pairings and fandom? I just don't think it's worth that much time and energy that everyone seems to be constantly giving up to it. :/
